with the winter olympics over, some friends and i are toying with the idea of having an olympics cookie eating event, similar to the nathan's hot dog eating contest.  the person we would try and imitate would obviously be Takeru Kobayashi.  i wanna see the dunking and the hot dog wiggle similar to what the professional eaters are doing.  there's also gotta be some sort of a time limit.   this can be so much fun.  i'm willing to go out and buy a video camera just to record the event... hopefully it won't get too messy though.

the winner will get the coveted imitation winter olympics hard drive medal.  i should see if i can draw a picture of the cookie monster on it or something (very doubtful though).

here's a pic of kobayashi at the contest, and download the video by rt. clicking on the pic and saving to your HD.  i want everyone in the cookie eating contest to look like this.

to get a better vid of kobayashi, go to:  http://archives.cnn.com/2001/US/07/04/hotdog.contest/
there's a vid in the middle right of the screen, and you can see him win his first nathan's contest back in 2001.

here are some of the other eaters from the contest that we will also need to imitate...

i was watching the wb11 news at 10 and saw a story on glucosamine and chondroitin.  of course there was no answer to the question of whether there was any benefit to taking them, but i thought it was interesting they had the chief of sports medicine at st. vincent's say go for it.  fyi - he's also the one who operated on the wrong knee of a patient.

here's the vid from the newscast

here's an article to prove i'm not making up the story of the doc.

so i found a couple of pics which show what i was trying to get across yesterday... the killer instinct while in a race.  below you will see the rabid pit bull instinct versus the happy beagle...  can you tell which is which?  of course each of those happy beagles can kick my ass when we run, but we're not talking about me here.   =D

i would like to take the time and congratulate my teammates - andel, andrea, and elyssa, AKA "the speedy beagles" for coming in first place female relay team at the cherry tree relay race

they kicked butt and almost beat fellow teammates "muddy paws trio."  if it weren't for their secret (ok, not so secret but it sounds more dramatic) weapon, the speedy beagles would have definitely won.  next year my money will be on speedy beagles.  they just have to get more of a killer instinct and become the speedy pit bulls or something.

it was a very happy and surprising announcement last nite at our olympic viewing get together.  too bad there was a stray east side beagle who was too lazy to swing by cuz of "chores"... whatever.   wonder why there is an east side / west side rift on the team???  ANYWAY... let me not stray off topic as i usually do...

congrats also has to go out to "L'Equipe Vite-Vite!" who were the second female relay team.  although only one is a teammate, i got to meet another runner from that team who came all the way from BROOKLYN to hang out with us, not just the east side... anyway... i'm starting to stray off topic again...

CONGRATULATIONS, you've all worked hard on your training.

as expected, everyone is picking on dick cheney, and rightly so.   i knew david letterman would, and i enjoy watching letterman more than leno.  i also like conan better than letterman, unfortunately there's no conan with the winter olympics on... rats.  anyway, i recorded the top 10 dick cheney excuses from the letterman show.  of course it will be better if you saved to your HD and watch it.

check it out:

today we had a record amount of snow in central park - 26.9 inches.  of course i had to go out with some friends and play.  central park was packed full of people sledding, picture taking, and just roaming around.  here's a nice pic of the people i hung with.  for more pics, go to the photo gallery section.

on wednesday after the team workout i went out to dinner with some teammates.  while we were chatting, we started talking about apple juice and i had mentioned how it had added significant weight on me cuz i used to drink it every nite after work.  well, someone else had mentioned how he ended up getting alot of cavities suddenly and when he asked the dentist, he found out it was the apple juice.  another teammate said her niece or nephew (i can't remember which one she said) had to have their baby teeth removed cuz they had rotted from drinking apple juice.  i guess what i'm trying to say is, stay away from the apple juice.

another thing to stay away from is gatorade.   it had been in the news a while ago that gatorade as well as some other drinks soften the enamel on your teeth and your teeth end up rotting away, and it's irreversible.  read more about it in my "articles and opinions" section, and look for february 11, 2006.

if you wanna see the video, just right click on the pic to the left and save to your HD and play it.

i've been meaning to post this for awhile now.   it's an email a colleague of mine at work and i exchanged.  it started off with me criticizing him about the lack of updates to his web page.  you can read about that in my links section... you'll find it.  anyway it evolved into a topic about viagra.  if you're interested, you can read the email here.   just start reading from the bottom and go up.

although his blog updates are few and far between, he seems to put alot of thought into the topics, except the latest one which is pretty much just a book review (yo el, that's what the ny times is for).  it's worth reading though.  the topic that got me was "the kindness of strangers" back on january 10, 2006.  it got me to thinking about when, if ever, i had gone out of my way to do something nice for someone i didn't know.  i'm glad to have remembered a number of things, although one didn't turn out well...

i'm in the bone marrow donor database.  i registered around 8 years ago when cammie lee's family was on tv asking for chinese people to register and they were having the blood tests down in chinatown, so i went.  a couple of years went by and during that time i moved from NJ back into NYC.  anyway, i got a letter in the mail (they were able to track me down somehow) saying i was a potential match and if it was alright, further tests would take place.  i called them up, got info on the procedure, just in case i was a match.  everything sounded pretty straight forward, and i said sure, go ahead.  i remember being kind of excited.  unfortunately i got another letter about 2 weeks later (something like that at least) saying the person passed away.  that actually crushed me and i've never forgotten about it.  i read the letter a few times, and obviously it said the same thing each time.

i just got another letter from them a few days ago (i've moved again since then and they were still able to track me down) and they're in the process of merging all the local databases into one national database... maybe they should have done that a long long long time ago.  anyway, they wanted to know if i had any updated info or wanted out of the registry.  the chances for a match are extremely slim, so i'm pretty sure i'm not gonna get another potential match.  i truly wish this had turned out better - then i would have definitely known i had a direct hand in giving someone a second chance.

suffice it to say, i may not do a bunch of kind things for strangers, but when i do, it's extremely worthwhile and it's for people who will sincerely appreciate the kindness, not for people who expect it and don't appreciate it, which i've seen much too often.  quality of the kindness, not quantity.

can you remember any random acts of kindness you've done, or "kindness of strangers?"

was this posting too much of a downer?  don't worry, this is probably as deep a posting as you will ever get from me (you can blame eliel for that)... at least in the blog section.

steelers won the superbowl yesterday, like you didn't already know that.   i had my superbowl party yesterday also.  it was good.  i can finally eat the chips i've been eyeing for the last couple of weeks.  the temptations were just so hard to resist!!!  i ordered 4 pizza pies, all with wheat crust... big mistake.  i picked a bad time to experiment.  i eat wheat bread, but wheat crust on pizza just didn't cut it for me.  i was left with 8 slices, which pretty much makes it an entire pie... i know what i'm gonna be eating for the next few nites.

it was an enjoyable gathering though.  good conversations with topics ranging from b'way shows to porn.

i'm really hooked on the tv show "how i met your mother" on cbs.  doogie plays the perverted friend - WHAT UP DOOGIE!!!  the concept sounds really stupid, but the show is just so well written.  hopefully they'll be able to keep the show fresh and original.

it airs on mondays @ 8:30pm, right after "king of queens" which i enjoy watching also.  i watch 2 1/2 men as well, but i don't watch the show after that, the one with jenna elfman.
